“shamanism (is a), religious phenomenon centered on the shaman, a person believed to achieve various powers through trance or ecstatic religious experience.” (1) Many pagan cultured religions or Pre-Christian era religions had in common the presence of shamans. In Western culture they were seen in the Native American tribes and civilizations such as the Aztecs. In Eastern culture they were commonly seen in indigenous tribes such as those in Asia.

A Brief Introduction into Shamanism
A shaman has a deep connection to the earth. They can feel and gain a lot of information through the land, earth and cosmos. They also have a great connection to animals, plants and the spirits of not only people, but animals and plants as well. Traditionally Shamans chose or are chosen for the Shamanistic life at a young age and went through vigorous training. In modern times however, this can be chosen at a young age or old. As we have stepped out of the need for tribal affairs and having a specific role, so have spiritual and status specific roles such as these.
Tracy Long goes further in explaining a Shaman in her book Shamanism (Your Personal Guide) “The word Shaman in general terms means ” one who sees" or “one who knows,” and it's thought to have originated from the Tungus people of Siberia, who call such people Saman. Shamans are highly respected people within their communities or tribes because they provide wisdom, healing, rite-of-passage ceremonies, counseling and knowledge. They tend to either come from a lineage of shamans or be chosen by spirit; it can take many years of teaching to become a shaman and to learn how to work with the land and with elements and nature. Shamans believe that everything has a spirit and that everything is connected. They also use altered states of consciousness to call upon spirit guides, ancestors, animal totems, and guardians while they seek to bring back harmony and balance to the land, the tribe or individual person."
Wisdom through the Shamanic Path
The Shamanic path contains many practices that are becoming ever more popular today regardless of religious paths. Some examples of these include: The belief of different spiritual levels/ worlds, use of spirit animals and guides, meditation and journeying, medicinal medication, rhythmic or sound therapy, use of items such as rattles, drums, staffs, Vestments, Dream Catcher, earthly objects such as crystals, and divination tools such as bones, cards and pendulums. A more surprising method is through the use of astrology.
