Dreams and the Elephant in the Room *PG-13+ post*

I wanted to take a second and talk about some of the misconceptions about events and symbols in our dreams that not a lot of people talk about due to the nature of them.

Sex and "Sexual Fantasies"

There is a common misconception in a dream that sex just means sex, and this can be demeaning to those that have seemingly inappropriate dreams. Typically when there is an action done in a dream, we keep it as an action between the two opposing factors. For example: Two doves fighting could be translated to two close friends or lovers fighting with each other or not agreeing. Sex however can be very intimate and is also apart or reproduction.

So what does sex mean?

Sex can have multiple meanings in dreams. By using Sigmund Frueds Theory of dreams, we can insight that sex is quite literally implied here and that it is our unfulfilled wishes playing out in our dreams.

In Carl Jungs theory on everything having a deeper meaning though the unconscious, we can look at other possible meanings. As we discussed earlier, having sex can be very intimate. Using this thought we can link sex being an act of intimacy. How the sexual act in a dream plans out can have different connotations. For example: If you were to dream of someone raping you, it can imply that your view on the relationship with that person or being is rather intrusive. Overall using this theory sex in a dream can define or describe the relationship of between the two parties involved.

So What About Body Parts?

Body parts such as genitals can have a wide range of meanings. We can look at symbology to define them. If it is a vagina it can be a symbol of receptiveness or how well you receive information, if it is a penis, it is the information you are trying to express or a physical penitration such as a needle. The anus can highlight the dreamers ego or the waste on the inside in which they have control over. Breast can indicate a need to be nurtured or without responsibilities. Genitals however can also mean the ability to reproduce or the inability to do so.

In Conclusion

When you dream of anything sexual, you have to remember that it doesn't always mean your sexual desire that you want to do in real life. You have to remember that sex is also a symbol for an action of intimacy. So the next time you have sexual dream, try not to be so hard on yourself if it is against your belief system or if it something that seems taboo such as sleeping with a relative. More then likely it just means that your unconscious mind is trying to help you define your relationship with that person.
